Sofia has been the capital of Bulgaria since 1879 and is the governmental and administrative center of the country. It is an interesting mixture of different cultures and architectural styles. In the heart of the city you will be surprised to find a lot of Roman ruins, scattered between the buildings and under the streets. You will be impressed by the massive constructions from the Communist era. The only mosque in Sofia stands opposite one of the largest synagogues in Europe and in the vicinity of several Orthodox churches. Follow the yellow brick road to take you to the Royal Palace and the landmark of the city – the majestic cathedral of St. Alexander Nevski built to honour the Russian soldiers who died for the liberation of Bulgaria….
